Are pets the cure for loneliness?

Are pets the cure for loneliness?

For many pet owners, having a furry family member is a joy like no other. Pets offer comfort, companionship and unconditional love. And they have the extraordinary ability to turn a bad day into a good one with a simple look.

But the benefits of pet ownership don’t stop there. A recent study has revealed our canine and feline friends can reduce stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness. In fact, pet owners are 36% less likely than non-pet owners to experience loneliness. Which means pets all around the world are having a significant impact on our happiness and fulfilment in life.

Because on average, 30% of households in the UK are one person households. This number has increased by a fifth in the last 20 years, and is driven by an increase in men aged 45 to 65 living alone. It’s no secret that loneliness is widespread among the older generation, but pets could be the key to combating loneliness and other mental health issues in us all.

The benefits of pets for mental health

Owning a pet has a knock-on effect in multiple areas of our lives. Not only are pets great companions in themselves, but they can boost our mood and help us adopt a healthier lifestyle both mentally and physically.

Helps you meet new people

Dog owners often talk to each other when passing in the street, at the dog park or in training classes. Pets provide a great opportunity for us to build new friendships and meet other people with the same passions in life.

Helps build your confidence

For those that are anxious about going out into the world or unconfident around new people, pets can help you live in the moment. For a lot of anxiety sufferers, having their dog by their side can relax the mind. Pets also offer an easy conversation starter when meeting new people.

Gives you a sense of purpose

Loneliness can feel more apparent when we have nothing to do all day. But owning a pet brings structure and routine into our days. We have a sense of purpose when we have to get up every day to feed, care and exercise our pets.

Increases exercise

Especially for dogs, exercise is important. Owning a dog gives us the perfect excuse to go for a daily walk, run or hike together. And not only is exercise a natural anti-anxiety remedy, but it relieves stress and increases our mental and physical energy. Exercising with our pets is also a great way to strengthen the bond between pet and owner, and keep you both fit and healthy.

Provides companionship at home

Pets make us feel wanted and needed. There’s nothing better than snuggling up to a cat purring on your lap, or coming home to a wagging tail. Pets help take our minds off our problems, and can even be a sounding board to talk through our troubles. Because let’s face it, most of us talk to our pets!
